Northeast Wisconsin

Northeast Wisconsin is home to the powerful Fox River and the beautiful bay of Green Bay. However, these waters have a long history of human impacts. Trading and commerce, logging and paper industries, agriculture and urbanization have all contributed to the long standing water quality issues of this region. Increased regulation, initiated by the passing of the Clean Water Act in 1972, led to the designation of the Lower Fox River and Lower Green Bay Area of Concern by the International Joint Commission. Along with this designation came the identification of 14 beneficial use impairments (BUIs). Some recent issues include polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), nuisance and harmful algal blooms, and low dissolved oxygen. Thanks to numerous conservation collaborations and united goals to address these BUIs, progress has been made and continues to this day. Some highlights include implementation of a PCB removal project in the Lower Fox River, fish and wildlife habitat restoration projects, and watershed recovery actions working as a system to remove impairments.
